The rose has been known as the “queen of flowers” since ancient times. It has been bred for more than 2000 years. The knowledge of the healing and beauty-promoting effects of the rose existed long before our era. Thousands of years ago in India the gulab (rose) -attar was also known as a remedy and in Arabia people bathed in rose water to reduce sweating and smooth the skin.
The Roman writer Pliny the Elder Ä. (A.D. 23-79) attributed relief from toothache to dried roses. Dioscurides (1st century AD) recommended decoctions of rose petals for headaches. The Greek physician Galen (5th century AD) prescribed rose ointment for puberty spots and rose water to soothe injuries.
In the 12th century A.D. Hildegard von Bingen advises applying rose petals to inflamed eyes. And Paracelsus (16th century AD) used the rose in the “Specificum Odoriferum” – a fragrance for treating illnesses – and used it for drowsiness, headache and fatigue during infections.
Today the rose is mainly used in the form of its isolated essential oil. The aromatherapist Eliane Zimmermann describes its comprehensive effect: “Due to its diversity, rose oil can be described as a panacea, it can be used successfully for almost all diseases.”
