True lavender (Angustifolia) and woolly lavender (Lanata), together with crested lavender (Stoechas) and spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia), are considered the main lavender species from a naturopathic perspective. Each of these species has a different focus in terms of its active potential. Lavender is a member of the Lamiaceae family and grows in Europe in the Mediterranean region – mainly in France and Spain, which is where this spike lavender comes from.

Spiked lavender also contains camphor and is one of the most important plants in aromatherapy. The name Speik, Spik and Spicanard comes from the Latin word “spica”, which means “ear”. This in turn reflects the typical appearance of the Speiklavender, whose flower shape resembles that of an ear of corn. The additional terms “latifolia” and “Grosser Speik” refer to the wider or larger leaves and the overall larger vegetation compared to the other types of lavender.

The Speiklavender is closely related to the wild mountain lavender and is the largest lavender species with a height of 80-100cm. It grows best just below 600 meters. However, the ingredients and effects are different from other lavender species.
