Lavandin

Lavandin ( Lavandula hybrida ) is a cross between the “mountain lavender” (Lavandula angustifolia) and the Speiklavender (Lavandula latifolia). It also belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae).

grows worldwide at heights of 0 to 800 m. The plant is sterile and is propagated by cuttings. This plant is also known as a clone. Cultivation began in the 1950s and has been confused with lavender ever since. The scent of lavandin is stronger and not as delicate as that of real lavender. The flower is used to make the “little lavender sachets”. Only about 40 kg of panicles are necessary for 1 liter of essential lavandin oil (a far greater yield than with real lavender!) With real lavender approx. 150 kg. Today is Lavandin the leading plant with more than three quarters of the area under cultivation in Provence.

In Europe it grows mainly in France and Italy – but also in Argentina and Tasmania.

The wild mountain lavender is mostly used for therapeutic measures. The economic advantages of cultivated lavandin were used in Provence, which was impoverished at the beginning of the 20th century, from around 1930 and over time played an increasingly important commercial role for the region. There are now numerous different cultivated lavandins that are well suited for the respective growing regions. Due to its high profitability and resilience, lavandin is the dominant type of lavender in Provence, especially for the French perfume industry around its center of Grasse.

Tip: After sports massage oil
2 drops Grapefruit organic and 8 drops of lavandin add to 50 ml organic St. John’s wort oil and use as a sports massage oil.

Tip: Invigorating leg spray for heavy legs
Add 20 drops of lavandin to 100 ml of organic immortelle water. Shake well. Spray onto legs to invigorate and activate.
