Frankincense (Old High German Wihrouch = holy incense), is a member of the balsam tree family (Burseraceae) For thousands of years, frankincense oil from the Boswellia tree has been used medicinally, religiously and culturally without any known side effects. The tree grows to a height of 1.5 to 8 meters. The frankincense arabic Boswellia sacra (synonym: Boswellia carterii ) grows in Somalia, Oman and Yemen. It only thrives in dry areas. The first harvest begins at the age of 8-10 years. From April onwards there will be several harvests. The quality increases during later harvests in the year. Depending on the size, condition and age of the tree, the annual harvest is between 3 and 10 kg per tree.
The area of Africa and the Middle East was also known as Arabia in the past, which is why this name can also be found in the essential oils. Until now, frankincense oil from Africa (Somaliland) was sold by PRIMAVERA under the product name “Frankincense Arabic”, but since September 22 we have been offering the product as “Frankincense African organic”. The frequently mentioned boswellic acid is found in frankincense resin, but not in the essential oil. During steam distillation or boiling water distillation, boswellic acid does not pass into the essential oil. It is obtained using other extraction methods
We distinguish between the Egyptian Boswellia sacra (synonym: Boswellia carterii ) and Indian(Boswellia serrata) frankincense.
Indian frankincense has more alpha thujas than African frankincense and therefore smells fresher. The physical effect is almost identical.
Around 80% of the entire resin harvest comes from Somalia. The rest of the harvest comes from southern Arabia – Oman and Yemen – and other African countries and India. Of the 25 different species, the resin of only four different ones is harvested for medicinal purposes: Boswellia sacra (synonym: Boswellia carterii )- the Somali frankincense (frankincense Arabic) – a 4-5 meter high, strongly branched tree with very thick branches, Boswellia serrata, the so-called Indian frankincense. The most famous and popular type of frankincense in the world is Boswellia papyrifera resin, also known as church incense.
