Eucalyptus is one of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). There are about 600 eucalyptus species. More than 50 eucalyptus species are used to obtain strong smelling essential oils by means of water vapour distillation of leaves and branches. The chemical composition and physiological effect of the essential oils depend on the eucalyptus species. Which type of eucalyptus is in the vial, Eucalyptus citriodora bio, e.g. darüber gives the botanical name information. Only three species are used medically correctly

Corymbia citriodora Syn. Eucalyptus citriodora or lemon eucalyptus

The eucalyptus is a self-growing tree. Eucalyptus citriodora – or lemon eucalyptus – is an evergreen tree with citrus-like fragrant leaves that reaches heights of up to 50m. Eucalyptus citriodora is a particularly mild and soft lyrical species and thus differs in its fragrance profile from a classic eucalyptus oil. Unlike most other eucalyptus species, the essential oil of lemon eucalyptus does not contain any eucalyptol, it mainly contains citronellal (80-95%), citronellol, geraniol and pinene. In Australia, 70% of the trees today are eucalyptus species. No other continent has such a large population of a single genus. The area of the natural eucalyptus population in Australia is more than 110,000 km2 (as of 2009)Today, eucalyptus species grow in more than 90 countries.
The eucalyptus citriodora is mainly native to Australia, Brazil and less in the Mediterranean. In Germany also known as lemon eucalyptus, lemon gum, boabo.
