Melissa ( Melissa officinalis ), Plant family: Mint family (Lamiaceae) also called lemon balm, is a perennial herbaceous plant that smells of lemon and prefers temperate, warm climates. It grows up to 1 meter high, has small white flowers and strongly scented egg-shaped leaves. The plant is also popularly called Immenblatt or honey flower. Origin: Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia, today cultivated in temperate and warm areas around the world.
It originally comes from the Middle East, from there it was brought to the Mediterranean area, from where it was then spread throughout Europe. Monks are said to have brought them across the Alps to Germany, where they then planted the lemon balm in monasteries. Charlemagne was so enthusiastic about lemon balm that he ordered a large-scale cultivation in 810. Melissa must be harvested before the flowering period. Then the leaves are dried. Only after drying is the fresh lemon-scented lemon balm oil obtained by so-called steam distillation. However, very little oil is extracted from the plant, which unfortunately leads to the oil being falsified and stretched.
