Amber trees(Liquidambar) are a genus of plants in the small family Altingiaceae. Liquidambar species grow as deciduous trees and reach heights of growth of 20 to 35 meters, the maximum diameter is 1.05 m. The botanical genus name is derived from the Latin word liquidus for liquid and the Arabic word anbar عنبر for amber. So the name Liquidambar means liquid amber. The oriental amber tree(Liquidambar orientalis )is native to southwestern Turkey, Syria and Rhodes. On Rhodes are known about five growing sites, of which the Valley of the Butterflies is the best known… In the Red Listedes IUCN the species is listed as “endangered” (vulnerable, VU). The resin of the amber tree is usually called “styrax”, Turkish “gunluk” or “sigla”. It is formed after injury to the bark. It is harvested from March to September from trees with a circumference of about 15 centimeters, then about 10 years old. From this resin is distilled styrax absolute essential oil.
Resin, stems, leaves and fruits are used medicinally. However, the resin was and is used not only for healing purposes. For example, in the Greek Orthodox Church it serves as the main incense in religious ceremonies. Styrax was also a popular incense in paganism. The traditional production of incense sticks from styrax is very common, especially in Asia.
Styrax is one of the oldest incense resins in the world and was even more popular than frankincense and myrrh 1000years ago. Today, the benefits of the balsamic resin extracted from the amber tree are gradually being rediscovered, with the resin being used primarily for aromatherapy in respiratory diseases. In addition, the sweet heavy smell of styrax successfully drives away insects and pests. For meditation and relaxation, the resin is also suitable.
Styrax goes well with: benzoin, rose, jasmine, violet, frankincense, myrrh.
