The Sandalwood tree ( Santalum album ) is a species of plant within the sandalwood family (Santalaceae). The original range is unknown. The sandalwood tree is grown in many tropical areas today. Mainly in India (Santalum Album) and Australia – Sandalwood New Caledonian (Santalum Austrocaledonicum) The sandalwood tree grows as an evergreen, small tree that reaches heights of up to 4 meters in Australia (Sandalwood New Caledonian) and reaches its best quality at around 40 years of age. The tree is fully grown at around 60 years of age.
The B aum belongs to the most valuable, but also most endangered tree species. The wood of this plant is one of the most expensive in the world. It has long been used in many religious ceremonies. Its scent is so sought after that the tree is threatened with extinction.
The reforestation increased in the years 2000-2006 from 7 to 70km² / year – the price too: in 1990 one tonne cost € 3,800 – in 2009 the price was 85,000 € / t
The use of New Caledonian sandalwood oil has only been known since the turn of the millennium. Due to the shortage and the threat to the preservation of Indian sandalwood trees, the use of New Caledonian sandalwood oil as a substitute for Indian oil has increased. We source the oil from an organic plantation in New Caledonia, a group of islands close to Australia and New Zealand. On the islands of Ouvea, Maré, Lifou and the Ile des Pins, the sandalwood variety Santalum austrocaledonicum Vieillar thrives. Logging is limited and there are sandalwood plantations in which 3 new trees are planted for every tree felled.
Due to its comparable composition of ingredients, organic New Caledonian sandalwood can be used as a cheaper counterpart to Indian sandalwood. The fragrance is somewhat fresher and less warm than organic Indian sandalwood, but smells typically of sandalwood.
