Melaleuca Species are evergreen shrubs or trees that reach heights of 1 to 25 meters, depending on the type, and belong to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Melaleuca viridiflora, commonly known as broad-leaved paper bark, is native to forests, swamps and streams of monsoon areas in northern Australia and New Guinea. It is usually a small tree with an open canopy, papery bark, and cream, yellow, green, or red flowers. The Niauli tree is now native to India, Malaysia, northern Australia, the Philippines, Madagascar, and the Moluccas.
Plants distributed in southeast Florida under the name Melaleuca viridiflora in 1900 were later identified as Melaleuca quinquenervia.
Traditional uses:
Melaleuca viridiflora is used by Aboriginal Australians for a variety of purposes. The bark is peeled off in layers and serves as shelter, litter, container, storage and cooking of food, fire tinder, watercraft and fish traps. In traditional medicine, an infusion made from leaves was drunk, inhaled, or used for bathing to treat coughs, colds, congestion, headaches, fevers, and influenza.
