Lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia , Syn. Lavandula officinalis , Lavandula vera ) is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). The real lavender is an aromatic shrub that grows up to 100, some up to 200 centimeters. We differentiate between that Lavandulaangustifolia between the lavender fine that is cultivated-and that Lavender extra -the wild mountain lavender. The plants are swelled by dividing the sticks, seeds and root-forming side shoots.
Most of the numerous lavender varieties, however, are cultivated forms of the three species known as the progenitors. Both the real lavender and the Speik and the poppy lavender grow on rocky, dry sites around the Mediterranean. The evergreen subshrubs have been thriving for thousands of years, especially in southern Europe, North Africa, India and southwest Asia. In Germany, only the strong seed-forming true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) sows itself and occasionally turns wild out of gardens.
The wild mountain lavender is mostly used for therapeutic measures.
