Frankincense (Old High German Wihrouch = holy incense), is a member of the balsam tree family (Burseraceae). The different types of frankincense trees, between 1.5 and 8 meters high, grow wild in the arid regions of Ethiopia, Yemen, Somalia, Oman and India. We distinguish between the Egyptian ( Boswellia sacra) and the Frankincense i ndish ( Boswellia serrata). Indian frankincense has more alpha thuja and therefore smells fresher. The physical effect is almost identical.
While Arabian frankincense and Somali frankincense are primarily used for ceremonial incense, Indian frankincense is more commonly used medicinally. In Germany, for example, only Indian frankincense from the Boswellia serrata tree may be used for pharmaceutical purposes. This consists of around 60 percent pure resin, five to nine percent essential oils and around 20 percent mucilage (polysaccharides).
This special ingredient is found exclusively in frankincense resin and is difficult to produce synthetically. Triterpene acids, so-called boswellic acids, are an important component of frankincense. These make up the main component of the resin and are among the most important ingredients of the natural extract. Scientists are currently investigating the extent to which boswellic acids could play an important role in the treatment of various ailments in the future.
