The lemon shrub (Lippia citrodora), also known as lemon scented shrub, lemon verbena or fragrant verbena, is a plant species from the verbena family (Verbenaceae). The lemon bush grows as a perennial deciduous shrub.

History

The lemon verbena originally comes from subtropical regions of South America and was brought to Europe at the end of the 18th century. Originally native to South America, the lemon verbena also grows today in the Mediterranean and North Africa. Sie reaches heights of growth of up to 2 meters in Europe’s temperate climates.

In the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid plants were no longer just exhibited and propagated, but also studied in more detail by scientists and often described for the first time. In the case of the charming lemon tree, the influential patron saint was taken into account when giving it its name – “un nuevo génera de planta consagrado a la Princesa de Asturias nuestra señora”.

Seeds and seedlings of the species sent from Madrid first reached botanists in Paris – where Charles L’Héritier named it Verbena triphylla in 1785 – and also in Oxford, where John Sibthorp introduced the plant to British horticulture. Lemon verbena or vervain was common in greenhouses around London as early as 1797, and its popularity as an important component of a fragrant bouquet increased in the following century. (Wiki)
