Thuja Essential Oil

Arborvitae or thujas ( Thuja ) are a genus of plants in the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ) within the order of the pines ( Pinales ). There are two species in North America and three in eastern Asia.

The species and their cultivars, except Sichuan arborvitae ( Thuja sutchuenensis ), are commonly used in culture; the occidental tree of life ( Thuja occidentalis ) in particular is often used as a hedge plant.

The western tree of life ( Thuja occidentalis ) thrives at altitudes from 0 to 900 meters in the northern United States and Canada

In naturopathy, thuja essential oil is used to treat warts. The solution is applied to a cosmetic pad and placed on the wart.

Twig tips and cones in particular are poisonous due to the thujone contained in the essential oil and can cause skin irritation in sensitive people, which is why it makes sense to wear gloves when cutting the plant. Ingested in sufficient quantities, the poison can be fatal.
