The Bitter Orange Tree: Botanical name: citrus aurantium ssp. Aurantium. Plant family: rue family (rutaceae) The bitter orange grows as an evergreen tree up to ten meters tall with a round crown. and has white flowers. Neroli essential oil BIO is produced from these flowers.
The leaves contain oil glands, the smell of the oil (Petitgrain) is perceived as pleasant. The white flowers also smell strong.
Traditionally attributed to Sicily (Neroli is said to have received his name from the Sicilian princess Nerola, who loved this fragrance very much). According to another story, the name is said to come from the Roman princess of Nerola, in the 17th century. At that time, this fragrance was obtained from the fresh flowers of the bitter orange trees by distillation or as scented water. Loving this fragrance above all else, she wetted all her clothes with it, her baths and even her gloves.
Today, neroli mainly comes from the Maghreb countries, i.e. Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and Algeria, but also from Spain and the Caribbean. One tree produces about 30 kg of blossoms per year and it takes about 1000 kg to produce one liter of organic neroli essential oil.
In addition to the application in the fragrance lamp difusor, as a facial spray or massage oil, Neroli is particularly popular in perfume blends, as it has a strangely beguiling fragrance. Since 1763 it has been the basis in Kölnisch Wasser 4711. Emperor Napoleon and Goethe were already great lovers of this scented water.
Neroli oil is of great importance in aromatherapy.
