The marjoram ( Origanum majorana ) is a plant that belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). The wild form comes from Asia Minor (Cyprus and Turkey), organic marjoram is a mostly annual herbaceous, sun-hungry plant. Marjoram bio grows up to 80 cm high. Since it is a popular spice, it is now grown not only in Mediterranean countries, but also in Central and Eastern Europe. However, good quality requires a fairly warm and Mediterranean climate.
The generic name Origanum derives from gr. ‘Oraos’ (= mountain) and ‘ganos’ (= jewelry, ornament). Obviously they were Origanum -Arten seen as “mountain ornament”. Majoran, was known to the Greeks and Romans as a symbol of luck. In Germany, this herb is known as “goose weed” because it is traditionally used to roast geese.
Hildegard von Bingen already described marjoram as a wonderful remedy for people who have difficulty falling asleep due to physical tension.
