The silver birch(Betula pendula) as a synonym ( Betula alba, Betula verrucosa), also known as sand birch, white birch or warty birch, is a deciduous tree species of the birch genus(Betula). Its slender, elegant growth, white bark and delicate spring green make it a symbol of spring. The birch gets its white color from the storage of betulin. Betulin reflects the light. This serves as a protective mechanism against bark fire. The hanging birch is found mainly in coniferous forests of Siberia and Scandinavia. It has now spread throughout Europe. Birch tar essential oil is distilled from the wood. In Scandinavia and Russia, it has a similar role in folklore as the lime tree and oak in Germany.
