As a result of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which largely banned the cultivation of hemp in most nations, the use of hemp products fell into oblivion. Especially since the 1990s, the versatile uses have gradually been rediscovered, established, and in some cases legalized.
Fortunately, hemp has finally made a comeback in recent years. The stigmatization that the world’s oldest useful and medicinal plant has experienced since the beginning of plastic production in the early 20th century has been lifted by countless independent studies. The health value of this plant, which is related to stinging nettle and grows all over the world from Iceland to India, cannot be emphasized often enough. The wonderful, nutty taste of the greenish-golden shimmering hemp oil has become an integral part of modern cuisine.
The use of hemp as a useful plant can be traced far back into history, with the earliest ropes made from hemp fibers dating back to around 2,800 BC in China, and its use as a textile fiber is documented by finds from the Zhou Dynasty (1,122 to 149 BC). The earliest use of hemp oil as food or for other purposes, on the other hand, cannot be dated today.
The fatty acid spectrum of the oil comprises mainly (over 70 %) unsaturated fatty acids. Of these, the polyunsaturated fatty acids are particularly important for human nutrition, especially the two omega-n fatty acids linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid, which are essential for humans, as well as γ-linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that is rare in edible oils. Their content in hemp oil is remarkably high at up to 4 %. Hemp oil also contains stearidonic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that is converted by the body into the fatty acid EPA. The omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of hemp oil is relatively low at around 2:1 to 3:1, which is considered beneficial for health.
Hemp oil also contains various other plant substances that are released during the pressing process, such as chlorophylls and carotenoids, which are also responsible for its color. It also contains relatively large amounts of tocopherol (approx. 80 mg/100 g, of which over 80 % is γ-tocopherol) and phytosterols (3.6-6.7 g/kg).
Unlike CBD oil and cannabis oil, hemp oil contains only a small amount of cannabinoids; it contains neither cannabidiol (CBD) nor tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – both of which are also extracts of the hemp plant – in significant quantities (WIKI)
