The tree or shrub belongs to the pomegranate family (Punicaceae) and has been cultivated for more than 3000 years. It grows up to 5m high and has a lifespan of several hundred years. It is at home in Asia, but has also been cultivated in the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Came to Central and South America through the Spaniards.
