There are about 35 species. “Ours” Winter green Gaultheria fragrantissima grows in Nepal and grows about 15-20cm high. The colour of the flowers ranges from white to slightly pink. The herb produces deep red berries, which exude an intense sweet scent when crushed.
The extraction of 1l oil requires about 900 kg of plant material.
For scenting, it is easy to mix with incense.
