Genuine sandalwood oil is one of the most precious essential oils as the tree is not cultivated. The Indian sandal tree belongs to the family of the sandalwood family (Santalaceae). It reaches up to 20m high and its best quality is around 35-60 years old.
The sandalwood tree grows in southern India also in Australia and Sri Lanka.
The Indian government is releasing only limited land for deforestation and insists equally strictly on reforestation. In addition exports have been limited.

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood oil has been an integral part of the case for thousands of years. The Ayurvedic properties of sandalwood are bitter, sweet, conpulling, and just as cooling. It reduces Pitta and Vata, with excessive use it can increase Kapha.
The name Sandelhozöl is often misused. Oil is often offered as “West Indian sandalwood”. Amyris balsamifera. It comes from the West Indies. It belongs to the diamond plants and with its fragrance and its effect is not comparable with a real sandalwood oil.
