The name rose can be traced back via the Latin pink to the Greek rhodon (rhododendron = rose tree). The Damascus rose is a 1.5 to 3 meter high shrub. The fruits develop into elongated, jar-shaped rose hips. We know two varieties: the summer damascene blooming in May / June and the autumn damascene blooming twice a year. The summer damascene supplies the prized Damascus rose oil. Other essential oils are made from Vinegar rose (Rosa gallica) and the centifolia (Rosa centifolia). Different in scent – same in effect.
