More than 100 years ago, a Turkish farmer, Rosa Damascena, brought plants from Bulgaria to the “Turkish Lakeland”. This offered the farmers, who had their existence there at an altitude between 1200 m and 1800 m above sea level through barren agriculture, the opportunity to earn an income for their families. To further process the highly fragrant flowers into rose oil, they formed cooperatives that took over the distillation of rose oil and the marketing of the product. The cooperatives still work today, but are increasingly threatened by the rural exodus, especially of young people.

This region is also the origin of the first organic rose oil from organically certified rose cultivation. More than twenty years ago, companies started their rose projects there. Contracts have been concluded with individual cooperatives for the conversion to organic farming. The changeover was supported by advice, the acceptance of the products guaranteed. This made this region the centre of organic rose cultivation in the world
