The muskrat (Abelmoschus) belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae). It has several subspecies, including the musk shrub (Abelmoschus moschatus Medik., Syn .: Hibiscus abelmoschus L.) from which the musk grains are used to extract the essential oil.
The muskrat is native to the tropics and subtropics. It is about 2.5 m high and has large yellow flowers. The ripe fruits of the Abel musk are cut off and dried until the seeds (musk grains) fall out. The seeds must be stored separately from other drugs so that they do not take on the musky smell of the Abel musk
1 liter of oil is obtained from approx. 500 kg of grains
Musk seed essential oil is an alternative to musk that comes from the musk deer glands. This small deer species from Asia is already threatened with extinction and is under protection.
