Two types of lime trees are used as a medicine: the winter lime tree and the summer lime tree. Both species belong to the linden plants (Tiliaceae) and bloom from June to July. They are found in Europe and Western Asia and mostly grow in deciduous forests. The Winterlinde or Steinlinde (Tilia cordata) belongs to the Mallow family and to the family of the linden family (Tilioideae). The Winterlinde is a deciduous deciduous tree, which can reach heights of up to 40 metres and can be over 1000 years old. Linden blossom Essential oil from New Moon comes from Bulgaria.
In the Caseofs and Slavs, the lime tree was considered sacred and as a female form. The Linde Tree is the national emblem of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Slovenia. It used to be the centre of a village: the village linden tree. It was seen as a symbol of peace, fidelity and justice. Celebrations took place under the lime tree, and lovers swore eternal fidelity.
Until the age of the Enlightenment, court meetings took place under a linde. Judgments often came back sub tilia, which means “under Linden”. It was a widespread belief that the tree helped uncover the truth in certain matters. In some cultures it was also assumed that sitting under the linden heals epilepsy.
“Linden open the emotional and spiritual heart, and improves cardiovascular circulation … Linden have a divinely inspired way of opening up to the bliss of your true multidimensional nature – the greater reality to which we all belong.”
– Robin Rose Bennett, the gift of medicinal herbs
