The lemon or lime is the roughly fist-sized fruit of Lemon tree ( Citrus limon ) from the genus of citrus plants ( Citrus ). The origin is probably in the north of India. Around the year 1000 first reliable evidence can be found both in China and in the Mediterranean area. Organic lemon is extracted from the peel and grows as a small to medium-sized, evergreen tree. Compared to other citrus plants, they are fast-growing and large. Young shoots in particular are covered with small, thin thorns. The shoot is reddish, the buds are also pink, the otherwise white petals on the underside pink to purple.
The lemon comes from ancient China, where it was already produced in the tenth century BC. Was cultivated. From there it reached Persia and was brought to Greece by Alexander the Great. The lemon spread in the Arab countries and with the crusaders it came to us in Europe.
The lemon became particularly popular in Europe when it became clear that the vitamins it contained could help against scurvy, one of the most terrible diseases of the Middle Ages, especially among seafarers. But the lemon can do even more, and people quickly discovered that too: It helps against fever caused by infections, digestive problems, skin problems, arthritis and skin care. For the people of that time, the lemon was a real treasure!
The evergreen trees produce elongated oval fruits (lemons) with yellow or green-yellow peel and become about 4m high.
Today cultivated in the Mediterranean region, Asia, Central and South America.
