Frankincense (Old High German Wihrouch = holy incense), is a member of the balsam tree family (Burseraceae) For thousands of years, frankincense oil from the Boswellia tree has been used medicinally, religiously and culturally without any known side effects. The tree grows to a height of 1.5 to 8 meters. The Arabic frankincense (Boswellia sacra) comes mainly from Somalia. The first harvest begins at the age of 8-10 years. From April onwards there will be several harvests. The quality rises in the later harvests of the year, and the amount per tree – depending on the size, condition and age of the tree – is between 3 and 10 kg per year.
Occurrence: Ethiopia, Yemen, Somalia, Oman and India.
About 80% of the entire resin harvest is obtained in Somalia. The rest of the harvest comes from southern Arabia – Oman and Yemen – and other African countries and India. Of the 25 different species, only four different types of resin are harvested for medicinal purposes: the Boswellia Sacra – Somali frankincense (Arabic incense) – a 4-5 meter high, heavily branched tree with very thick branches, the so-called Boswellia Serrata Indian frankincense and the Boswellia carterii. The most famous and popular type of frankincense in the world is Boswellia papyrifera resin, also known as church incense.
